A Message From Our District President
Truly Counter-Cultural (Part IV)
We have been exploring the
turbulent “C’s” that confront the Christian Church today. The very real dangers of confusion, complacency
and cowardice are met with confession, Christ, church
and compassion. The love of God in
Christ Jesus is something the world in its sinful state cannot comprehend (1
Cor 2:14). Dying in place of a “good”
person is something parents are willing to do for their children. Soldiers may fall upon a grenade rather than
having it explode and maim others. We
get that. But God shows His love in
dying for sinful, horrible, awful people.
Jesus dies for His enemies, His persecutors and harshest critics. Though He is guilty of no sin He bears the
guilt of the whole world in going to the cross.
When confronted by their sins
people claim innocence, extenuating circumstances or being misunderstood. Whatever reason is offered, it is simply an
excuse. Few willingly say: “I was wrong, please forgive me.” That would be showing vulnerability. That is opening yourself to criticism, second
guessing and ridicule. You are admitting
failure. Your pride is on the line and very few are humble enough to swallow
it. Blessed are those who do. Jesus kept
quiet. He took the pain and
punishment. He made no objection. By His silence our mouths are opened in awe
and thanksgiving. Jesus is radical. The
love of God in Christ Jesus is counter-cultural. God’s mercy, grace and forgiveness have no
parallels in the fallen world.
The culture knows all about finding scapegoats,
assigning blame and offering excuses. It loves nothing more than watching
people get what they deserve. Read more!
